We’ve all been there. Picture day. The day we make memories that will last a lifetime. If your house is anything like my house, it’s not the Hallmark moment you’ve imagined. Tempter tantrums, exploding diapers, angsty teenagers that have decided now is the best time to assert their authority, kids that all of a sudden don’t like their favorite outfit. And there, in the background, is a momma who is trying to pull it all together and find her zen while getting everyone presentable and on time to the photographer.
Yes, even in my house, a photographer’s family, this is still very much the case. Our last family photo, I overheard a conversation between my husband and son. “Why did we even have to do this??”
“This is for your momma. She does a lot for us and doesn’t ask for much. I don’t want to do it either, but we’re going to, because we love momma, right?”
Cue Hallmark moment and teary eyes.
Pretty much every family and mommy and me session I have done, I see the frustration behind momma’s eyes. So let me put your mind at ease.
- This is NORMAL. Pretty much every family. I honestly cannot think of a family who has NOT shared a story similar to mine. So, take solace in the fact that even though it’s frustrating, it’s 100% normal and your family is not supposed to be like the ones you see in the corny Christmas movies we cannot get enough of.
- My job is capturing the magic in between the chaos. And I’m good at it. I love watching mommas stress and frustrations slowly disappear as I show her behind the camera what I’m capturing.
By the end of the session, you’ll walk away knowing that somehow, amid all the chaos and everything that went wrong that day, you will have the images that LOOK like everything went right. Because it did, truly. This is how it is supposed to be. What feels stressful in the moment always fades and we are left with the beautiful memories. Now, memories that your children and one day their children will look at and finally appreciate all you did for them. They’ll see the laughter, smiles and loving faces and know just how deeply loved they were.
